IPL 2016: Rahul Dravid to mentor Delhi Daredevils

Former Indian Captain, Rahul Dravid will mentor Delhi Daredevils for the 9th season of Indian Premier League. Paddy Upton has been appointed coach.

Rahul Dravid was involved with the Rajasthan Royals till last year. The former batting star was a key figure in the Rajasthan Royals but he was up for grabs after the team was suspended for two years by the RM Lodha committee.

Dravid reportedly turned down an offer to coach the Daredevils for IPL 2016 after a long season with the India 'A' and the India U-19 teams. He returned home a couple of weeks ago from Bangladesh after guiding Ishan Kishan's team to the under-19 World Cup final.

Dravid, it is understood, was not keen on coaching the Daredevils as he wants to spend more time with the family.

Rishabh Pant, Khaleel Ahmed and Mahipal Lomro, who were part of the India team for the Under-19 World Cup, are also in the Daredevils squad for IPL 2016.

Dravid said he was excited with the prospect of working with Delhi Daredevils because they had brought together a young and impressive squad.

"I'm excited to be working with Delhi Daredevils. They have assembled a young squad for the seasons ahead. I am looking forward to working with Paddy and the rest of the support staff," Dravid told the media after the Daredevils

Dravid said he made some wonderful memories with the Rajasthan Royals but insisted that he was ready to move on with his next challenge in the IPL.

"I am now looking forward to building the same memories with Delhi Daredevils. I have always admired the way they have worked and I am looking forward to add to that group," said the legendary batsman.

Delhi Daredevils had a disastrous season in 2015, winning only five out of 14 matches and finishing seventh out of eight teams. Following the poor results, the Daredevils management decided to sack coach Gary Kirsten.
